Time and Money Savers for Your Company.

Trench Compaction Wheel In Action The final step in a successful utility installation consists of backfilling and compacting the soil around and on top of the newly installed utility. A professionally done job of soil compaction helps assure that the ground in the area of the installation has the required load supporting capability and will not settle over time. Done incorrectly, an inadequate job of soil compaction often means doing the job over with associated cost and schedule overruns.

Soil compaction consists of mechanically increasing soil density by moving soil particles closer together and forcing out the air that is trapped between them. Barone compaction wheels help to assure that this is done faster and more effectively than vibratory machines are capable of doing and with less wear and tear on operator and machine. Consider the following before deciding on which method of compaction you will use.

SOIL BRIDGING is more likely to occur with vibratory machines that compact from the top down leaving unbroken lumps below the surface with voids around them. Compaction wheels work from the bottom up, eliminating bridging while breaking up lumps and filling in voids.

VIBRATION from vibratory machines can loosen joints in water, gas and sewer lines as well as damage nearby slabs, foundations or electronic equipment. This is not a problem with the smooth operation of a wheel.

HARD LUMPS OF HEAVY CLAY are not torn apart by vibration. The aggressive shearing action of a wheel easily breaks up these lumps so that they can be intermixed into the rest of the fill soil.

SPEED OF TRAVEL is critical with vibratory equipment. Too little time means poor compaction while too much is inefficient. With a compaction wheel you get the same compaction with a fast or slow motion. Six to eight passes usually produce the required densities, and in less time than the same compaction with a vibratory compactor.

GREATER LIFT THICKNESSES are possible with a wheel. Lifts of 12² to 24² for backhoes or 18² to 36² for excavators means doing more work in less time.

THE MIXING AND KNEADING ACTION of a wheel spreads the available soil moisture and produces a more uniform soil consistency for better compaction.

Last but not least, vibratory machines by their very nature lead a tough life and require frequent maintenance. The Barone Care-Free™ compaction wheel, on the other hand, is lifetime lubricated and requires absolutely no maintenance.

Do your crews consistently put everything back into the trench that came out of it? If you consistently haul material away from a jobsite that has been compacted with a vibratory plate, you have probably left a lot of voids behind. Try the Barone Care-Free™ compaction wheel on your next job and you will see the difference.

Lifetime Lubricated Journal Bearings.....
WHY A JOURNAL BEARING?
Broad Shoulders Carry Heavy Loads

MATERIALS HAVE CHANGED
BUT NOT THE SCIENCE OF BEARINGS

Available materials have improved but the science of bearings has not changed for some time. Bearing selection is part engineering and part educated common sense.

Because the compaction wheel is a heavy loading, slow speed, start, stop, reverse operation, we think the journal bearing is the very best choice for our product.

SIMPLE & LONG-LIVED
A journal (sleeve) bearing is a simple device for supporting the shaft while it rotates. It is the oldest bearing device known to man. The concept has survived beacause these bearings are survivors.

The aluminum bronze sleeve spreads the load over the entire shaft area under the bearing. And, a thin, full cylindrical film of lubrication fills the space between the bearing and shaft to protect them both.

FORGIVING
The bearing itself has no moving parts. It does not fail suddenly or catastrophically. With proper lubrication wear is very gradual. The bearing will continue to operate even after considerable wear has occured. And wear is minimized by our careful selection of a lubricant that provides maximum lubrication over the widest range of temperature changes.

ON THE OTHER HAND
Roller, needle and ball (called antrifriction) bearings were developed for higher speed, more predictable load applications. They do not spread the load out over a large area; they concentrate it and squeeze out lubrication under peak loads. Any failure means "done for" almost always in a hurry right when they are needed the most-lots of loose parts in a trench full of dirt. Down time is the last thing a busy contractor wants. We've done our best to make sure you don't have any because of our product.
